Cali Dewitt’s multimedia practice pairs poetic and provocative wordplay taken from disparate sources with appropriated imagery culled from the internet, social media, and the news; the resulting works contrast figures and text in free-associative ways. Dewitt’s juxtapositions—which range from the text “CAGED ANIMAL” placed over a flower-strewn landscape to Gothic-font provocations printed on the American flag—place his practice in the lineage of such artists as Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Ed Ruscha, and others who explored the confluence of images and words to convey meaning. Dewitt has exhibited in New York City, Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Glasgow, Basel, and Brussels. He has collaborated with a number of musicians including Kanye West, Varg, and Iceage.
