This was a gift from the artists when we were roommates on Canal Street, New York in the 1990s. Both artists worked on the bag, with Rita hand-embroidering one of her iconic figures on the front. 
 
Rita Ackermann first achieved recognition for her depictions of almond-eyed girls idling in states of undress, a Gauguin-like take on New York's 1990s downtown culture. Ackermann's paintings, drawings, and collages combine Neo-Expressionism with figure drawing, deploying ballpoint ink and spray paint atop oil and acrylic to yield congested, luridly colored surfaces. 
 
Susan Cianciolo was born in 1969 in Providence, RI, and lives and works in New York City. From 1995–2001 Cianciolo produced her critically-acclaimed collection RUN. More recently, her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Bridget Donahue, New York (2017); Yale Union, Portland, and 356 S. Mission Road, Los Angeles (both 2016). In 2017 she participated in the Whitney Biennial by revisiting her 2001 project Run Restaurant, first presented at Alleged Gallery, New York, and transforming the Whitney Museum of American Art restaurant into an immersive installation.
